What is your New Year’s Agenda?

New Year'S Day, Fireworks

Hey everybody, I know it isn’t quite 2017 yet or even New Years, but I wanted to get a head start in case I am having too much tomorrow celebrating and don’t have time to blog about it and wake up with a hangover on Sunday morning before work – not saying this will happen. I would never admit to this kind of fun! lol Don’t want to be a bad role model for all you good little noodles out there (but this could possibly happen) just a word of caution.

I want to keep this particular post short and sweet. Two questions I have for you to answer:

  1. What are you doing for New Year’s Eve & New Year’s Day?
  2. Do you have a New Year’s resolution? (Feel free to let me know what it is in the comment section)

Now, these two questions are easy to answer, but I want you to think long and hard about the 2nd question, because if you do have a New Year’s resolution, think about if you made it for a prior year and didn’t fullfil it, why didn’t you fullfil it? Think about why this is something you want to happen or do, think about whether or not it would be a long term goal or short term, think about the plan (how will you achieve this goal, what sacrifices will you need to make, and is it realistic). Most importantly, just think about how you will respond if you don’t conquer the goal you set (but don’t linger on it)

Why I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions.

  • I am constantly making goals for myself throughout the year (New Year’s isn’t significant to me)
  • Half the time I forget about them within the next 3 months.
  • Most of the goals I set, I don’t set them for a day and time, I just start them now, why wait a new year to do something
  • It becomes much more of a fad to people – set one and say you have one and forget about it half way through the year and then start over again next year… just a cycle that I don’t want to get caught up in
  • A New Year doesn’t always translate to a “new me”, yes I am growing and learning and continuously working toward bettering myself but it doesn’t take a New Year for this transformation to happen. Some things take longer than others, but just because it is 2017 doesn’t mean “OH NOW I CAN BE THIS PERSON” lol the old 2016 me is in the trash.. no.. I don’t look at it in this way.
  • by this time next year, everyone will be on this kick “omg, I am so over 2017, bring on 2018” lmao – It never ceases to amaze
  • I just have learned that if I want something, I don’t need to wait for it to happen, I need to make it happen – I don’t need to wait another year to make something happen, If I want it, I go for it no matter what year we are in.

Some people may call me boring or a “debbie downer”, but I haven’t made a New Year’s Resolution in like year or two and honestly, sometimes I come up with mental thoughts of one, but then I am like.let me just write down goals and make shit happen. It works for me. The only “New Year’s Resolution” I have , if this even counts.. is to make my blog even better, to take it up a notch and really hit the ground running – I have so much in store for you guys. 2016 has taught me more about blogging and writing and making sure I appeal to my audience and I want to continue honoring that by giving you ALL I GOT. I hope that all of you have enjoyed my writing as much as I have enjoyed sharing with all of you during the 2015-2016 year, if you thought you loved it, 2017, you will LOVE it!!! (hopefully, no promises).

Thank you everyone for all the amazing reads, the support, the positive feedback, the debates, the continued learning experience and the personalities you all have that have made me feel at home and at ease. I look forward to seeing many, if not all of you in 2017.  I am still accepting ideas as far as to what you would like to see on my blog (topics, theme ideas, videos, how often you want me to write, etc) I am also accepting ideas for my YouTube channel (topics, videos, editing, etc) whatever you have in mind, feel free to share with me and I will be sure to write it down and think over it when I am making final decisions.  I hope to have everything announced by the end of first week of January if possible, if not, the next week after that – depending on the schedule and how close I am in coming to a decision. Some things may remain the same, and some may change so be aware of that as well.

Hope all of you have a wonderful New Year’s Eve & New Year’s. Be Safe and have fun!

My Gym Workout – Dec. 28th

Ello, hello, hey fitfam

I hope I am not late for the party, unless it encourages working out and getting all sweaty .. then I can wait another hour until everyone is finished. LOL. Today was another day I managed to make it to the gym, quite earlier this morning due to me getting off work at 8 in the morning. I somehow forgot to wear a bra and so had to drive all the way home to put on one before heading to the gym – don’t ask me how this happened, something tells me it was from the lack of sleep the night before or the late night partying where we all remove our bras and undies and show up to work! xD okay maybe not that.

Today’s workout consisted of back and arms. Many people for whatever reason don’t like working out the arms because it is “boring”, but I find that it can be fun and quite entertaining depending on the exercises you choose – and the amount of gains you get on leg day is possible on arm day if you really hit that weight hard. Today I PR’d in multiple exercises (which I will make mention which ones and by how much) and so that made me happy about arm day. I love back muscles, they are super nice to see on other people and I love when mine show – it is to die for. lol – maybe not that serious.

Warm up:

  • /Treadmill: 10 minutes, 2.0 incline, 3.8 speed (you are probably wondering when I plan on doing something different with my warmups)

Workout Session: back & arms

  • Wide-grip lat pulldowns (dropsets): 5 x 15, 12, 10, 8. 6 (amount of reps)/ 1 x 100lb, 1 x 85lb, 1 x 70lb, 1 x 55lb, 1 x 40lb
  • Wide-grip half lat pullown: 3 x 15, 100lb (first time doing this exercise)
  • one arm cable row: 4 x 8 per side, 25lb Superset with wide-grip cable row: 4 x 15, 2 x 42.5lb and 2 x 50lb (this was using the dual pulley cable because someone had to use the other one, so the load is smaller)
  • Alternating Dumbbell curl: 5 x 15, 12, 10, 8, 6. 40lb – I PR’d by 10 pounds more! yay!
  • Preacher curl with the EZ-curl bar: 3 x 10, 8, 6. 30lb Superset with seated incline dumbbell biceps curl: 3 x 15, 30lb
  • Close grip bench press: 4 x 12, 10, 8, 6. 1 x 35lb, 1 x 55lb, 1 x 65, 1 x 75. I PR’d by 5 pounds! yay! I think my 1RM used to be 100lb, so I am aiming for that again
  • Rope Triceps pushdown: 3 x 12, 10, 8. 30lb Superset with overhead rope triceps press: 3 x 12, 10, 8. 25lb

My preacher curl I am going to go up to 40-50 pounds because 30 was easy for me. I want to get my bench press back up to 100lb, so it is a work in progress at the moment. I am happy to announce my biceps have gained some hefty vein gains and muscle.. looking like a huge hill no one wants to ride their bike down. lol. I didn’t have to do squats today (squat challenge rest day) yay for me! my legs said “not today shay, not today”.

If you are someone who has been following my workouts and doing them, please let me know what you think, I know many people on Insta have told me that they have been doing my workout and have thought some of them to be killer and I love it, so if you are one of those people, give me some feedback on your thoughts!

Leave all your workouts in the comment section, along with your PR’s and positive attitudes! Feel free to share my workouts with friends and family, get them motivated and lifting!

Topic Tuesday YouTube video – (Caution: emotional video)

Yes, I did cry in this video and yes I was trying to hold the tears back but something came over me. While the thought of me crying on video is embarrassing and I hope that no one makes jokes at it, I am not ashamed of it because it was how I felt about the situation and because life is serious. This probably won’t happen often where I am shedding tears on camera, but when it does, trust and believe I have a good reason to. I could have cut the part out where I am crying and sobbing, but I am a real person with real emotions and I am not going to hide them from people in order to look “perfect” on screen. Hopefully all of you will understand, if not. oh well.

My Gym Workout – Dec. 27th

Heyy Fitfam,

Today’s workout is short but it was very heavy and very leg day, lol. I would have to admit, I made it short on purpose, knowing that it would still benefit me because of the type of lifts I was doing and the load. Looking at the workout at first glance, it will seem very simple and not much to it, but after actually doing the workout, it takes longer than you think and definitely fatigues you. Of course many of you are stronger than myself, so I could only imagine how you would feel at the end of this workout.

Warm up:

  • Treadmill: 10 minutes, 2.0 incline, 3.8 speed

Workout Session:

  • Smith Machine Squat: 5 x 15, 12, 10, 8, 6.  1 x 35lb, 1 x 65lb, 1 x 75lb, 1 x 85lb, 1 x 115lb
  • Smith machine stiff-leg deadlift: 4 x 12, 10, 8, 8.  1 x 105lb, 1 x 125lb, 1 x 135lb, 1 x 155lb

Circuit Training: 3 rounds, 30 second breaks after each round.

  • Reverse lunge: 15 reps per leg
  • Switch lunge: 15 reps per leg
  • Burpees: 15 reps

Air Squats: 110 reps

I need to load more on my squats to overload a bit and my deadlift is lower than my max, but still was good enough for me for the amount of sets/reps I was doing. I want to definitely keep working on both of those movements. During the circuit, I won’t lie, by the 2nd round, I was taking 45 second breaks because those switch lunges killed my legs so good, I didn’t know if I would make it. It had been a VERY long time since did those and let me tell you, those are no joke if you are doing them in continuous movement. I definitely should do more circuit training because I don’t mind them at all and they can add some much needed cardio in my workouts without the redundant running or walking. As Always the air squats for the squat challenge, 110 reps didn’t seem so bad, until I hit 80 reps and realized I needed 30 more and my legs were sore as hell. I still need work in some areas but nothing was horrible during this workout.

I snapped some selfies of me at the gym today and posted them on Instagram, If anyone is interested in seeing my progress pictures, and wanting to see how far along I am, I will post my instagram at the bottom.

Also, I did make a YouTube video for today, so I will post that to the blog as well and my social media.

Star Wars Actress Attacked- Carrie Fisher

This was one of my very first blog post – talking about Body shaming. I thought in memory of Carrie Fisher, I would reblog it and share it for those that didn’t get the chance to read it.

Staying healthy isnt a crime-Fitness is a lifestyle choice

Star Wars Attack

Star Wars Actress asked to lose 35 pounds

So as we are all aware, the actress who has played “Princess Leia” for the past decade & just recently was also in the newest Star Wars movie has been attacked about her weight; not to mention her age. For those of you who may not know whom this icon is, she is Carrie Fisher. Carrie Fisher has been a legend since the very first Star Wars movie appeared in 1977; she played Princess leia and is known for her beauty and well spoken words on camera.
For many, this movie meant so much and stood for so much & brought out the inner kid.  Unfortunately it seems as though some people didn’t like the idea of “Princess Leia” being older, and not so “thin” in their opinion.  People forgot she is not the same person she was…

The Day After Christmas Day

Hello everyone,

I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and if not Christmas, a wonderful holiday. I decided to make a post about the day after Christmas because this is usually when the “guilt” sets in and everyone feels horrible about eating so much or not staying active during the holiday. I wanted to check it with all of you and see how my readers are feeling; do anyone of you feel guilt, or regret, did you feel like you did better managing your portions and amount of food this Christmas vs the last, did you not care and just dig in, did you find yourself lazy today and not wanting to do much of anything.. I want to hear it all.

Personally, I didn’t eat much and for multiple reasons, but one being I didn’t feel so great, and I wasn’t very hungry this Christmas, my appetite has somewhat changed a bit – I have noticed this. I did however indulge in a few treats here and there but nothing that made me feel guilty, I am not one to eat sweets, but my grandma did such a great job baking, I couldn’t resist a bite or two.   Not only did I want to know about your eating habits, but of course I want to know did you receive all the gifts your heart could dream of, did you give as much as you received, did you spend time with loved ones/friends, did you find yourself grateful for everything positive that has happened and did you smile and laugh, take tons of pictures and sneak Santa a cookie or two. I hope everyone found something productive and positive to do on their Holiday – we might not all celebrate the same holidays, but how we spend those days doesn’t have to change, we should always be grateful for what we have and who we have in our lives.

I appreciate everyone being patient with me, as I have not done a YouTube video since a week or so, and well, I was going to do one today, which I might still and it might be a little emotional.. who knows. I just know one thing, so much has happened, both good and bad and no matter, I appreciate all of you for taking time out of your good and bad days to find time to read my blog post. I wish all of you a wonderful Monday!

Dumbbell lateral raise – Exercise

Today, I am going to introduce you to a new exercise. I know this video might come off intimidating because this guy is “huge” in size, and normally I would try to use a female in order to make women more comfortable or Scott Herman (but I didn’t necessarily agree with his teaching of this particular exercise 100%) and didn’t want to confuse any of my readers. Not saying he is bad, because I do respect his videos and many of them I follow his instructions when I forget or when I am trying something new at the gym. Anyways, this exercise can be done at the gym and/or at home if you own dumbbells, or weight plates. This particular video is demonstrating the exercise using dumbbells.

Personally, this exercise burns the hell out of my delts every time, like no matter how little the weight is (I have decreased it) and it still burns the same, so this is something that you don’t need high weights in order to feel the results, If you do decide to use higher weights, keep in mind that your form/technique should not stray, if you notice you cannot keep your form/technique or you cannot keep controlled – that is a sign to decrease the load or do minimal reps ( just saying because I know some of us want to look like bosses at the gym lifting heavy, but lifting heavy with bad form does not get you gym cred from me; no matter how big your muscles are) and I try to not embarrass myself; so if I am struggling with a heavier weight, I have no problem sucking up my pride and decreasing my load.

First off, hands up if you have performed this exercise and your neck started to hurt? Raise your hands if you have performed this exercise and did it incorrectly? Raise your hands if you have heard different ways to perform the exercise and you’re confused? lol. That is a lot of people and no reason to be ashamed because different trainers will teach their clients different ways of performing an exercise, not everyone on YouTube knows what they are doing, and not everyone is born with exercise knowledge instilled in them – this is why we have people with degrees and certifications and experience (hopefully trusting they know what they are speaking about) – some don’t. So don’t be ashamed, it is a learning experience for everyone at some point.  No matter what your situation is, there is a proper way of doing the exercise and the problem is many people disagree with what muscles come into effect and which don’t and which should be doing what and really .. IT SHOULD BE WORKING THOSE SIDE DELTS.

If you are feeling neck pains, it could be for multiple reasons, one being you are using a high weights and putting more stress on your neck. It is possible to work the rear delts the more you lean forward, and that is fine if that is your goal at hand, but if you want to work the side delts, then leaning too far forward will not do the job. Like Seth mentioned in the video, hand placement also makes a difference because you will eventually hit your shoulder in different areas depending on the positioning of the body and where your hands are placed on the dumbbell. – if you want to hit your side delts then place your hands in the middle of the dumbbell, and have a straight back (less leaning forward)- a little lean is okay though.

Now we could go into depth and make you read a textbook worth of information, but I don’t want to and you don’t need to.

How to:

  1. Stand with straight torso and dumbbells by your side with palms of the hands facing you (starting position)
  2. While maintaining the torso in the stationary position, lift the dumbbells to your side with a very slight elbow bend (although I don’t bend my elbows because it helps to keep the emphasis off my elbows when I am doing the exercise) P.S I have seen and heard of people swinging their torso back and forth, but I don’t do it and I think it is unnecessary personally but if that is your thing, then don’t do it excessively- because the exercise needs to stay controlled. Exhale as you execute this movement
  3. Lower the dumbbells back down slowly (to starting position) as you inhale
  4. Repeated for recommended amount of reps

Let me know what you think of the exercise, and how much weight you use. Hate it? love it? never have done it? I want to hear it.

Meal Planning 101- Something to make life easier

Be Excited, fitfam, fitness enthusiast and cooks!

Meal planning is the topic & a fun topic at that.. you will soon see.

I have had people ask me rather lately how to go about meal planning and why they should consider it, considering so many people do this nowadays and I am not sure if it is a “fad” or just a way of life, but for me, it is a lifestyle choice that I made about 6 months ago or so.. and it has turned out to be amazing for me. Now I know some people have done this and it didn’t work out, and that is okay- everybody has their own thing that works for them and their family. I know people who don’t like the fact how time consuming it is, think it is tedious, and very stressful at times, and some find it be repetitive and don’t see the cost effectiveness of it. I am sure all of you have your reasons as to why you like it or don’t like it, and no worries, I look forward to having you share that with me in the comment section — so feel free to do so.

I could write a REALLY long “how to” about meal planning and make you read through everything and fall asleep half way, or I could do one better and tell you how I meal plan for myself – this way it is real life & still gets to the point without all the extra. Now for starters, meal planning can be done in so many different ways with a variety of foods; people can make it extensive and lengthy or short and sweet and people can make it more expensive or budget friendly. I have seen videos where people meal plan with the help of their spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend and kids — so if you don’t want to do it alone, this is where family comes in. Now meal planning goes this way, if you like to cook and have fun in the kitchen; this is something that won’t be dreadful, but if don’t like cooking and don’t know how, it might start off frustrating but it doesn’t have to be ( I will help give you some ideas for that). As I go along explaining things, I may hit or miss some topics, so please if something isn’t mentioned and you want me to hit on it, please leave it the comments and I will; and if you are someone who wants to share your own tips/advice, feel free in my comment section as well. Time to get started.

  1. Why am I meal planning?
  • To cook more often
  • To spend less money at the grocery store
  • because of my schedule
  • to give me a reason to start eating healthier
  • to bring the family together
  • because you enjoy organization
  • to have you pack for lunch instead of eating out
  • to motivate you to lose weight
  • to help get you prepped for your next competition
  • You are an athlete
  • You want to learn how to cook
  • you like to experiment in the kitchen
Whatever your reason is, that comes first, because this will determine how you want to go about meal planning and whether you plan on making it a long term investment or a short term experience. I for one, made this a long term investment because I love to cook, I am an athlete (on and off), I spend less money (in my opinion), it motivates me to eat healthier and provides me a means to pack my lunches for work vs having to eat out, and it has provided me ways to try a variety of foods in the process – made me a better cook too (although I was already pretty amazing at it).
     2. What Am I meal planning?
  • Breakfast
  • lunch
  • dinner
  • snacks
  • work only meals
  • pre and post gym meals
  • breakfast/lunch and dinner
What are you wanting to mealplan in? If it is everything, then you will have your hands full, BUT it can be done and can be just as fun but will require patience, If it is one meal vs all of them, then it will be easier but still provide some time and some patience .. depending on the length of time you want to meal plan for..
    3. How long do you want to set the meal plan for?
  • A week long meal plan
  • month long meal plan
  • 2-3 days worth of meal plans
  • a couple of weeks
The length of time you want to meal plan for with each meal you make will determine how much money, how much food, how many servings, and how much time you want to put aside for it. For someone who wants do a monthly meal plan – it will take more food, more time, and more space in the fridge/freezer, and it will determine how long you plan on eating the same meal. Some people like myself, meal plan for 2-3 days ahead, and sometimes I will do a weekly one. The longest I have done is 2 weeks worth and that was not so bad, but it tested how much I really liked my meal.. to have to eat the same thing for 2 weeks straight, luckily I still like it. For some people, they cannot eat the same food after eating it the day before, so they will meal plan for just the day and take it a day at a time.. so if it works for you, it works for you.
  4. Buying the right containers for the meal prep
  • Sizes
  • how many you need to invest in
  • quality of the containers – how durable they are
  • are they microwavable, freezable
  • can they be thrown in the dishwasher or have be thrown away after use
  • are they portable enough where they can fit your everyday bag or backpack, etc
I personally think this is a big deal because containers can make and break your food, some are not good quality and will prohibit your food from lasting as long, not to mention, you want decent sizes because you want to make sure it will fit everything you are cooking (but keep this in mind as well, you won’t want to shove so much food in a container where it doesn’t fit with a proper lid),  You don’t need to spend so much money on containers but just keep in mind how you should go about choosing them,
  5.  Who are you meal planning for?
  • Yourself
  • Family members  (kids, spouse, family dog)
  • roommates
  • your coworkers
who knows, but you know, and depending on who you are meal planning for can determine how much food you want to cook, how much time you will have to invest in each meal and take into consideration that not everyone will want to eat the same foods as you. I meal plan for myself and it works out fine (honestly the less food I have to share, the easier it is on me) LOL.
Now that we hit the basics, I think we can skip ahead to “what is meal planning”? Meal planning is basically being able to come up with a menu item that you want to cook that will last you a certain amount of time.
How Does Shay Meal Plan, Let’s ask her…
  1. I use pinterest when my brain fails to come up with recipes (this helps people who don’t know how to cook, people you like adventure, people who like experimenting and those that need new ideas in the kitchen) not to mention, if you are a cook, then you can post your recipes on the site and share it among others
  2. After deciding what I am going to cook, I decide what day of the week I want to start the meal plan and how long I want it to last. I am kind of weird, I prefer to start on Sunday or Monday and make it last for 2-3 days, sometimes a week and then start the cycle all over again
  3. After cooking the meal, I transfer it to a container and leave 1-2 containers in the fridge and the rest in the freezer to keep it from going bad – also because you never know if I decide to not eat one day or go out with friends instead, that way I am not wasting food I cooked
What I failed to mention in those steps, is I determine if the meal I am cooking is cost effective, if it has a variety of food groups, if the servings make sense to me (will I have more veggies or more carbs, etc), and whether or not I could eat the meal for the specific time frame without getting bored and venturing off to something that I want to avoid or eat less of. Chances are if you meal plan the right way, you shouldn’t have to venture off the beaten path unless it is for a reason outside of being bored from eating the same meal over and over again – due to you choosing how long you will make that meal last. You are in total control when you meal plan, so the excuses you use, well are just excuses because you can determine whether to meal plan day to day or weekly.
  • I meal plan for dinner ( I don’t do it for any other meals of the day)
  • I choose meals that are protein based and add my veggies to it and my own carbs. (ex. I make my meals around the main dish, if I make baked chicken, then I choose the veggie and carb for the meal) it is easier that way.. instead of finding a recipe for each food group. Although I have found veggie based recipes and used them when I don’t want to take the easy way out or if I want something new.
  • If the meal I meal plan isn’t filling, then I either find a reasonable snack (although I don’t keep snacks at my house, when I want them, I shop for it at that time) or I don’t get any! lol. or I reevaluate the size of container I used and determine if I need to use a bigger one for next time or a smaller one if I didn’t finish the meal; that way I don’t go to bed hungry or waste it, I know people sometimes say just drink more water, but sometimes we don’t want to and if you skipped a meal from earlier, it just means you need another serving or a snack- that is okay. Don’t be afraid to eat.
  • I meal plan according to my goals (weight loss, bulking, maintenance, competition prep, etc) this I find very helpful.
So honestly, this was still a lot of content to read, but hopefully it was helpful for some of you new to this, and will answer some questions. I really do mean it, when I say don’t be afraid to eat, you are allowed to get seconds and I am not going to judge you, because I have gotten seconds of something before (yesterday to be exact at my Christmas work event), I know we want to stay within certain serving sizes and not overeat, but you can eat seconds when you are hungry & not feel bad for it. I never feel bad for it, lol. — shit truth be told, I had third and fourths at the party! do I regret it? no, did I gain 10-20 lb , no. Am I ashamed? hell no, I have to eat to keep up my gains & I know what I am doing when I do it.. I hold myself accountable – not to mention I keep track of my macros and if I decide to be a bad girl and eat more, then I did it, if I stay within my macros like a princess, then it is what it is. —— this was just a tidbit of my opinion,
Thanks for reading and I am thankful for your patience as well, since I haven’t posted my workouts these past couple of days, I have been studying – but once things start to slow down a bit after the holidays, things should be back to “normal”. Feel free to share, comment, follow.

I honestly, didn’t yet write out a plan & I only have some weeks left before it is Jan. 1st, so my plan is still under construction. Not many things will change, but I want to TAKE IT UP A NOTCH! – I always like to take my blog(s) up a notch, make it spicy and burn your minds! hahaha

Now, I won’t make any promises by saying it will be rolled out the 1st of Jan, because, truth is, it could and it could not be, depends on what I have on paper and if I like it. I have had peers share what they think I should add to my blogs to give it a kick, & I will take into consideration their ideas – I have written down their ideas believe it or not; BUT, I thought I would be fair and allow you guys as the audience to share with me ideas that you would like me to implement on my blog, not to mention, if there is something you want me to add on my social media accounts or if I should sign up for other social network sites, etc. Keep it honest and don’t be afraid to make it a large list of ideas, I will write it all down.

As much as I plan on kicking things up a notch on the interweb, I also, plan on kicking things up a notch in my personal life – career, traveling, athletics, etc. So with this comes more responsibilities and less sleep at night but I am hoping it will all eventually pay off.  As thinks unravel, I will continue to keep everyone up-to-date on the newest news, events, plans and make everyone aware of what is to come. I appreciate all of you for sticking around.

Again, please feel free to share ideas you have that you would like to see me implement on my blog & social media for the year 2017.
