Energy Drinks|Are They Bad For You?

Hey bloggers,

This post will be quite simple and to the point. I am not a doctor or nutritionist, so to tell you how many energy drinks to consume would be wrong and to tell make those of you who drink them quit would also be wrong. This post is simply to give you some information that maybe you know or didn’t know about consuming energy drinks , mostly cons of course because there are not a lot of pros when it comes to energy drinks and fitness/health.

How many of you consume an energy drink daily? what kinds do you like? why do you consume them? do you prefer them over drinking a can of pop? Do any of you consume them before your workout? – let me know in the comment section!

Some of us like our coffee, some of us love our pop and some of us will smash an energy drink more than 2 twice in a day, we all have our go to beverages, many of them for keeping us awake and giving us some kind of “needed energy” to make it through our day. Nonetheless, is it working out for us okay? I don’t particularly drink energy drinks (never have been one to rely on beverages for energy or to stay awake) so I am not sure if they actually work , or if it is an individual basis, BUT I do know some things people should keep in mind when consuming these beverages.

  • Caffeine and other stimulants that are added to energy drinks can boost heart rate and blood pressure  – this could lead to death if consuming too many.
  • Some companies have added alcohol in their energy drinks, studies have shown that it can lead to possibly dependence on alcohol (especially younger people who consume more energy drinks throughout the day)
  • The drinks can disrupt the balance of salts in our bodies, which can lead to ‘arrhythmia’
  • Some studies have said that consuming energy drinks can lead to more drug use of pain killers (stimulants) – this something they are doing more research on.
  • Excessive levels of caffeine can impair cognition.
  • Niacin is a main ingredient in many energy drinks & is known to cause dizziness and rapid heart rate.
  • Can be addicting – like many other things in life (which is not good for the health overall)
  • Drinking too many energy drinks can cause insomnia – making it difficult to fall asleep.
  • Some people can jitters & anxiety from drinking energy drinks

So these are a list of things you may want to keep in mind when choosing to drink an energy drink and how many you decide to consume. There are tons of studies that have been going on in order to determine other ways energy drinks effect the body and mind. It would be a good idea to do some extra research on your own time as well and open your mind to other alternatives so that you don’t consume too many in a day. 1. I used to drink a lot of energy drinks last year when I had to sit my exams and to be honest they did help me stay sharp while revising but all that caffeine wasn’t good for my anxiety and so I stopped and don’t drink energy drinks or most drinks with caffeine anymore.

      1. Yeah it helped me stay awake and sharp because I was getting kind of bored while revising and I was losing my concentration. It also helped me stay awake till later on at night then I usually do but the problem with that was I found it even more difficult then usual to fall asleep when I did want to sleep. It just made me more anxious in general and I felt like when I drink a lot of caffeine my anxiety definitely starts acting up. Plus there is so much sugar in energy drinks which is pretty unhealthy so I don’t drink them anymore.

      1. When I was in my early teens I got hooked on slushies. It’s the caffeine/sugar combo. I can be off for a long time but take a stressful day, fatigue, and feeling unlovable and I can fall off the wagon. Then I’ll go for a few days or a week because after one I keep going to avoid the withdrawal headache.
My preference is for very little to no caffeine which is why I also avoid energy drinks. Plus all the other reasons you listed.

      2. Ahh okay! wow, no but that makes sense. I heard the withdraw headaches are horrible, i know someone who went through a bunch of them through their caffeine quitting phase. Glad i never got hooked! haha when I did drink pop, it was usually always Sprite 😀

    1. My mom is a huge coffee drinker, I am not but I will drink it every once in a great while but don’t need it to function! lol I have been drinking tons of tea lately though. I don’t drink enough water, so it is something I need to get better at!

      1. I have like three ‘tea-cups’ of coffee a day, but not filter coffee, so in fact I am drinking chicory ! I am not a tea drinker at all, I used to be a rooibos tea drinker, but I am so over it. I am however considering trying a couple cups of green tea….what do you think of that?
Funny how water is not enjoyed by so many people….I suppose it is bland, but it’s good for you LOL

      2. Ooo never heard of chicory, I will have to look into that and see what it is about. You don’t drink filter coffee at all? Why did you get over the tea? I think I have drank so much tea that I might get over mine too! haha hopefully not because I do like it. I don’t like green tea, at least not the kind I have tried, but maybe each one has a different taste or my taste buds might have changed since then. I know many of my bloggers commented saying they enjoyed green tea, so hopefully you will as well 😀
Yes, I think it is because it is bland (even though these days you can buy flavored water) – that isn’t so bad, but it is good for us. I need to start a water schedule.
