Multiple Personality (Mental Health Awareness)

Thursday is mental health awareness on my blog.

I make it known to you the different kinds of mental health conditions and illnesses that may be overlooked, looked down upon & hope it gives you some insight – if not insight, then some interest in wanting to do your own research. I have always said and will continue to say, I am all for keeping a mental balance, one that is just as important as your physical attributes if not more important. Today’s topic of choice is “Multiple personality”, many of you may have studied this, or perhaps deal with this condition, and myself, has worked with individuals first hand who have this condition and many others. I might not understand 100 percent everything that comes with this, but having learned from watching, from textbooks and online research, I have learned quite a bit. My hope is that my viewers (you) will come forth and share what you know with me and my readers because I always appreciate more information that is current or will help people to understand.

What is ‘Multiple Personality”

Another word for this is “Dissociative Identity Disorder” –

When two or more identities, or personality states are present in and alternatively taking control of an individual.

  • Some individuals can have two and others can have 30.. it all ranges.

Characterized by a fragmentation, or splintering, of identity rather than by proliferation, or growth of separate identities” PsychologyToday

  • “Certain circumstances can cause or stressors can cause a particular identity to emerge, and the various identities may deny knowledge of one another, be critical of one another or in conflict with one another” psychologytoday

  • memory loss of specific times, people and events
  • possible out of body experiences
  • depression, anxiety and thoughts of suicide
  • detachment from your emotions
  • lack of sense of self identity

  • No definite answer but said to have come from trauma (sexual or physical abuse) – developing a way to deal with the trauma
  • combat and natural disasters can cause DID as well

  • Psychotherapies
  • medications – none of which treat the disorder but can help treat the mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, etc)

With proper treatment of this disorder, it is said that many can improve their ability to function in their occupation and personal lives.

Hello! College graduate in exercise science and ACSM Certified Personal Trainer. My blog has all kinds of fun topics, something for everyone who is anyone that involves themselves with fitness. I like to think of fitness as a confidence booster, something to make us feel good and look good & pushes us to do things that make us feel more productive, unstoppable and stronger mentally and physically. My blog focuses on building people, and helping people see their true potential, while also sharing my journey with workouts, competing with powerlifting, and sharing how to's on workouts, so you step inside the gym with more knowledge. I don't know everything but I am on a voyage to build my character, my strength and work on my weaknesses --- with awesome people in my corner who support me and my goals. I plan on being your cheerleader, friend, coach and trainer all-in-one and most of all, I want to be your listener, the person who can listen and gain more knowledge about you and learn what makes fitness important to you; what's your why! (Your why will carry you to the finish line). It's important to have purpose for something, because you will need that purpose when you start to give up on yourself or want to quit. "Don't let the fire that guides you, dim" - Shay-lon Besides the fitness stuff, I reside in Ohio, love dogs and love pizza. Typical 26 year old trying to build an empire that brings out the best in others and makes me the best person I can be in all aspects in my life. Before I die, I want a reason to live, and I was given that reason each day I am able to wake up --- I have learned to not take life for granted and to explore as much as possible because to live with zero regrets would be fantastic! 1. Actually it’s not called multiple personality disorder anymore. In the DSM V it’s called Dissociative Identity Disorder and it’s extremely rare. The term MPD hasn’t been used for some time .

  2. Usually multiple personality disorder starts when a person is young but most people don’t really realise that they or someone they know have it till they get older. Usually the personalities emerge because our brain is trying to protect us from something it thinks our own personality wouldn’t be able to handle and the only cure I have learnt about that actually works is hypnotherapy where the doctor talks to all the personalities and eventually convinces them to leave the patients mind (I know it sounds super weird but I didn’t know how to explain it properly!). I remember learning about a girl with 24 personalities and all the extra personalities would actually talk about her actual personality and she had no idea about it. And the doctor couldn’t get rid of all of them so now she has like 4 personalities.
Another case I learnt about was this girl who had 3 personalities. When she was about 8 she was raped by her Gardner and that’s when the first personality emerged to shield her from the horror of sexual assault. Her second personality was formed when she was a teenager and was abused again by her father or step father (I’m not sure which). So her actual personality knew nothing about the abuse and she had a really mellow life, she was shy, introverted, quiet and a kind of dull person where as the other two personalities hated men and so when she would hang out with her boyfriend, her father or other men she was really nice but when it was the other two personalities she would be horrible to them. When she went to the psychiatrist he tried to talk to the other personalities and eventually he realised that her actual personality was ‘dull’ and holding her back so he tried to get rid of it and leave her with the personality she formed as a teenager. Obviously this was highly unethical and she sued him and I think she won. It was a very interesting but sad case.

    1. Wow, hypnotherapy, I did not mention that, so this was some good information, it indeed is something new to my attention and seems a bit off putting when you explained it because it seems somewhat weird, but I appreciate your adding that treatment because the more the merrier 🙂

I had not heard of either one of these cases, but then again never researched any, I do find the last case to be seriously traumatizing to think a Dr would do such a thing, but I suppose that is the world we live in these days. I am glad she fought him on it, because I find that his unethical way of handling things could definitely lead to much more weird crap if she had not. Good for her for realizing his sickness, lol.

      1. Yeah hypnotherapy sounds weird but it’s also one of the few therapies that actually work. Basically the doctor hypnotises the patient and talks to all the personalities making the unconscious and repressed memories conscious so there is no need for the extra personalities anymore. I don’t know if that explanation is any better.😂

Yeah I’m so glad she sued him because he had no right to mess with her like that against her will! I was so angry when I read about the case because it’s so incredibly unethical.
