365 days of self discovery: day 11

Day 11

What is your greatest accomplishment?

To be honest, there are very few things in my life I would consider as accomplishments, because this word I use seldom when talking about myself due to the fact I don’t feel as though I have accomplished enough to say I have drastically seen progress in my life. The few important things that have happened in my life that I am proud of and are of great accomplishment to me was: Graduating college with a degree & passing my ACSM CPT exam after failing it for 3 years straight and having to save up money each time (which many times put me at risk of not being able to pay another bill) because at the time I was crunching numbers financially in order to save up enough for the exam each time I failed & was close to giving up.

Both of those events have served me well in the recent years and have given me such a confidence boost to know I did something other people couldn’t do or haven’t done or gave up doing. It was a breath of fresh air to do both of these things and know it would benefit my career and future. To say the least, it made me feel less of a let down and more like a role model for my youngest brother and these are moments I will cherish that happened in time and with work, tons of sacrifice and tons of failures in between.

What would you consider your greatest accomplishment? What is something you have done against the odds or that made you feel on top of the world when you achieved it? Doesn’t matter how small or big, it is still something worth mentioning. Leave a comment telling me about it and be sure to follow and like 🙂

Love, Hands, Signing, Heart Hands, Heart

I am overwhelmingly ecstatic! this has been the moment I have been dreaming off. The milestone that that I have been aiming for, because this is the amount of people not including my subscribers who have been nothing but supportive, inspired and motivated, became my friends, my wordpress family. I have built some hefty bonds with some of you, had chats with many of you, have gotten to know the majority of you and have been supporting your blog and progress as well. Nothing says more to me, than to know that my blog has reached over 1000 people from different places and have challenged people to stay fit and healthy, get moving and be productive, make sure you are aware of the stigmas that follow certain mental health disorders, make sure we come together in unity so we can hopefully lessen the bodyshaming, and lessen the bullying and somehow build each other up because we need to, we need to find what brings us together and use it to better the world each day. I am so proud of all of you and so very thankful for all of you, because as you already know, I wouldn’t have made these achievements without your support, your engagement, your time, all of you have been an asset to my accomplishments and a HUGE factor for why I want to continue to write good content, publish good videos, challenge myself to new heights so that I am doing my part in making sure you get inspired, motivated and feel like you can come to me or come to my page and have some sort of fulfillment. I don’t want to let any of you down and I hope my blog continues to grow and continues to help those that want it and build the confidence of those who need someone in their corner. Thank you so much for being my #1 fan!

PR Day (1RM & leg day combo)

Hello – How are you FitFam?

Remember when I told you I was going to do some PR’s and figure out my 1RM’s and what not? or did I not tell you and kept it to myself? LOL. Either way, I did it today. I made today the day, and decided I would share some good news, hopefully all of you will proud of me, because I am proud of me in the gym so far.  I did my 1RM for: bench press, back squat and deadlift. I haven’t done my 1RM testing since like college and so it had been awhile and I needed to figure out where I was in order to continue to grow strength and excel at my goals. I will go through each one, and then I will tell you the rest of my leg day workout I did today.

1RM results:

  1. Back squat: 175 lb (185 lb fail – almost had the bar land on me, but was careful) lol Now while I was in college, I was doing 200 lb + and doing really well with it. Since not being able to use a barbell for a while and then after graduating not keeping up with strength gains when I had them, I lost a lot of strength and for awhile I was only able to squat less than 100 lb (YES IT WAS THIS BAD & yes I was very pissed off at myself) but since working on it and doing what I had to do, I was able to go up to 145 lb for about 6 reps. Now I am able to do a solid 1-2 reps with 175 lb. I increased my squat by 30 lb.
  2. Bench press: 95 lb. (105- fail) Again this decreased by like 4 lb since college, but I am happy I am only 5 lb away from 100 – this is very good. I was stuck at 60-70 lb for a long time. My bench press increased by 25 lb
  3. Deadlift: 225 lb. ( 230 lb -fail) This was VERY VERY difficult for me, since I had not always worked on my deadlift and didn’t start really doing them until about 4 months after graduating college. When I had first started deadliftng, I was only doing about 80.. or something like that and then after a while I would add more weight and was doing 105 10 reps easy, then increased it and was doing 160 as my highest. Now my deadlifts have increased by 65 lb. This was amazing to me.

To say the least I am proud of myself for how far I have come in my strength and my progress. I realize being able to do even 1 rep for my max means a lot to me because now I will  start again training with these new numbers in mind and have them written down to keep track of progress and plateaus. All of these results reign from having to use a smith machine -_- because my gym doesn’t offer barbell free weights that are in a rack – so in all honesty, it would mean it would be about 15 or so pounds less for each of them with a free weight barbell (realistically) but even so, I would have still PR’d in all of them except for the squat since 200 lb was with a free weight barbell. For right now, we will have to just keep in mind that until I purchase one of my own or find a gym that offers one in my town (until I move) I will have to resort to the smith machine. Don’t give me too much shit for it. LOL

The rest of my workout……

Superset:

  • Goodmorning: 3 x 10, 40 lb
  • Jump split lunge: 3 x 10, 10 lb( dumbbells)

Superset:

  • single-leg deadlift: 3 x 12, 15 lb
  • pistol squats: 3 x 12

Superset:

  • vertical crunches: 3 x 10
  • roman sit ups: 3 x 10

push up challenge: 40 reps

All in all, I am happy with my progress, wish I could be using more free weights but still able to get gains using the smith machine for now. Honestly, I don’t hate the smith but because I am not used to it, it can be hard to do some workouts on it, verse what I would normally do with a free weight barbell, but I use my resources 🙂 hopefully all of you enjoyed my good news and will continue to show your support and cheer me on.

New Goals:

  • Bench press: 100 lb
  • Squat: 200 lb
  • deadlift: 245-250 lb

I want to hit these within the next 3-6 months at the very least, so we shall see what happens.

If You Are New To Fitness..

In Case The World Forgot…..

I do still make post that don’t have my workouts attached. Let’s be honest, the majority of people who aren’t into fitness, think it is stupid, waste of time, don’t understand it, don’t give a shit or were misinformed, they tend to to think fitness is about “showing off muscles”, over-confident assholes, girls who have fake tits on the cover of sports illustrated, men who are meatheads and talk about lifting but don’t have common sense and feel as though we go around bragging about our bodies and how much we can lift in order to make ourselves feel better. When I mention anything about working out, or fitness to someone who doesn’t participate in those activities, I get the complaint, the look of “wow.. yeah, I don’t workout.. not my thing”, the comment “eh.. I would much rather smash my face with food” and while I don’t mind those particular people and respect their feelings toward fitness, I want them to know, being hip to being a healthier person doesn’t have to mean all those stereotypes I get boxed in.

Sure, we have the occasional assholes who think they are better than everyone else at the gym, the occasional “bitch” who seems to think because she is in shape, she can talk shit about the girl on a journey and the pretend trainers who think they know everything about fitness because they watch YouTube videos and their favorite celebrity icon is Arnold. WOW! — yeah.. those people might suck, but guess what? we also have people like myself who don’t have to pretend to know shit, because if I know it, I say it and if I don’t I find out, I don’t think I am better than anyone at the gym because GUESS WHAT? I’m not. I don’t talk shit about the girl/guy on their fitness journey because I used to be on mine and probably had the same people talking shit about me. It seems like we are a rare bunch, but really we aren’t; there is more of us out there and many of us can’t stand when people think highly of who we are because we are human just like you, we didn’t come out the womb with a 6 pack and a nice ass – we started from the beginning too. Sure, I don’t know what it is like to be you, and you don’t know what it is like to be me, all you see is it what I look like and assume that I have no bad days because I carry a confidence about me that I don’t allow to fall victim to people’s negative vibes – this could be you, but instead you are giving up, you are doing exactly what people do to you, to me by assuming that my story is any less important than yours and giving me shit about being fit to excuse your choices and wrong turns in life.

So to help you out and get you thinking outside of the box – if you are new to fitness:

  • Give everyone a chance to tell you how they can relate to your journey instead of pretending that you are the only one with a soap box- who knows, you might just be shocked to hear some of our journeys.
  • Don’t judge me for choosing to be healthy and choosing to work my ass off for the body I have (you have no idea how long it has taken me and I will be damn if you choose to make me feel like shit about it) INSTEAD.. how about you get to know me as a person instead of judging me for what I look like and the amount of time I spend inside a gym.
  • Get rid of the negative people holding you back from feeling good about yourself, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO BE CONFIDENT, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF.
  • Don’t stay complacent, always strive for more. There is always room for progress mentally and physically (just cause you met your goal of losing 5 pounds doesn’t mean you stop doing what you are doing) – it means aim for new goals (appropriate goals, realistic goals)
  • Develop a learning mindset instead of a know it all mindset. Don’t get mad at helpful criticisms, people normally want to help, not make you feel dumb.
  • stop whining. Seriously, we get it.. you were a child who got made fun of, so have many people, you were in shape and drank too much and gained weight, we got it. No need to throw it in our faces to make us feel bad, seriously.. we respect what you went through but I don’t care about your past, let’s focus on what you are going to do about it now. Tell me your story but don’t throw it in my face when shit starts to get hard and you want to give up, because guess what? many people have been through some shit, your’s is not the worse case scenario. It is okay to go through dark times, and cry, and be mad.. but don’t make me feel like the monster who did it to you.. because I am only here to be supportive and help. For ex. “You have no idea what I have been through.. blah blah blah..” chances are I have been through some shit too, just different story.
  • Don’t go into fitness comparing your results to other people’s results= this will end in disaster and make you even more anxiety ridden. This isn’t about competing against another person, this is about making yourself happy with yourself.
  • To get your body right, have to have your mind right – balance is important. You might be strong physically but are you strong mentally.. this makes a difference, trust me. You might be lifting 500 lb squats but if you don’t have a good mindset , you won’t lift it.. because you don’t believe in yourself nor your capabilities and you have allowed your mind to keep your body from achieving.
  • Don’t worry what others think of you, because chances are, they aren’t paying you any attention in the first place – if they are, they aren’t doing what they need to be doing (which is focusing on their own journey)
  • Don’t talk to us (people in the fitness industry)  like we are gods/goddesses, we aren’t. We enjoy compliments, but don’t forget we are human too, we have flaws, we have bad days and we struggle just like you do and when I am PMSing, I get bloated too, our abs don’t keep us from dying ya know.. we are HUMAN 🙂
  • Don’t worry about lifting the heaviest weights and running the furthest distance – do you. Whatever you can do, do it and do it well.

If you want respect from us, respect us. Not all of us are the same, and I sure the hell don’t want to be a stereotype, I am Shay-lon and if you want to stereotype me to make yourself feel good, then do it, but don’t be shocked when you find out I don’t meet your expectations. Fitness isn’t about being the strongest, fastest, most athletic person in the world, fitness is about finding that burning desire to create something amazing out of yourself and conquering the very thing that kept you from starting in the first place. If you don’t know what fitness is about, the find out.. from someone who does.

The Former Editor of Muscle & Fitness Magazine wants me to write for his website

blogger

Hey bloggers,

I wanted to inform you on two things:

  1. The Editor in Chief of “Muscle & Fitness” magazine got back with me, he wasn’t impressed with my pitch but wants me to send him more with what he requires and told me I was a great writer and he wasn’t saying “no” to me for writing for the magazine, because he thinks I can do it, and would make a great writer for the magazine. Overall, I will be studying on “pitching” and making sure I do better this time around, I am happy he gave me a second chance at this.
  2. The former Editor of Muscle & Fitness magazine contacted me today, asking if I would be interested writing for his website working along side with him. It isn’t paid but he will promote me throughout all social media platforms, and use my “bylines”. He seems eager to work with me, I have yet to send him an email replying back, I will do that today or tomorrow (with a “yes”) because it could turn into a job or open more doors for me down the road. Nonetheless this will be a good stepping stone, hopefully leading into the right direction.

Thank you for the continued support, I will be very busy, but hopefully it will pay off in the end. Something good came out of my bad week.

Your fitness blogger,

Shay-lon xoxo
