Multiple Personality (Mental Health Awareness)

Thursday is mental health awareness on my blog.

I make it known to you the different kinds of mental health conditions and illnesses that may be overlooked, looked down upon & hope it gives you some insight – if not insight, then some interest in wanting to do your own research. I have always said and will continue to say, I am all for keeping a mental balance, one that is just as important as your physical attributes if not more important. Today’s topic of choice is “Multiple personality”, many of you may have studied this, or perhaps deal with this condition, and myself, has worked with individuals first hand who have this condition and many others. I might not understand 100 percent everything that comes with this, but having learned from watching, from textbooks and online research, I have learned quite a bit. My hope is that my viewers (you) will come forth and share what you know with me and my readers because I always appreciate more information that is current or will help people to understand. 

 

What is ‘Multiple Personality”

Another word for this is “Dissociative Identity Disorder” –

When two or more identities, or personality states are present in and alternatively taking control of an individual. 

 
  • Some individuals can have two and others can have 30.. it all ranges. 

Characterized by a fragmentation, or splintering, of identity rather than by proliferation, or growth of separate identities” PsychologyToday

  • “Certain circumstances can cause or stressors can cause a particular identity to emerge, and the various identities may deny knowledge of one another, be critical of one another or in conflict with one another” psychologytoday

Symptoms:

  • memory loss of specific times, people and events
  • possible out of body experiences
  • depression, anxiety and thoughts of suicide
  • detachment from your emotions
  • lack of sense of self identity

Causes:

  • No definite answer but said to have come from trauma (sexual or physical abuse) – developing a way to deal with the trauma
  • combat and natural disasters can cause DID as well

Treatment:

  • Psychotherapies 
  • medications – none of which treat the disorder but can help treat the mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, etc) 

With proper treatment of this disorder, it is said that many can improve their ability to function in their occupation and personal lives.

Athlete’s Foot (health/injury)

Wednesday Injury/health condition chats. This one might sound familiar to some of you. Have you heard of athlete’s foot? I first heard of it in middle school when a coach of mine was talking to a fellow classmate about it, but to say I have had it, would be a lie but luckily after doing research during college and learning some things, I am now more understanding of what this is. Hopefully this post will be helpful to you as well.

 

What Is Athlete’s Foot?

A fungal infection that effects the skin on the feet and is considered contagious. 

Just an Fyi, it has been known to spread to hands and toenails. 

 

There are more mild cases and some that are very severe – I shown a picture that wasn’t severe, but feel free to look at some of the more severe cases, they can be very scary. 

 

Causes?

 
  • Direct contact from someone who has it
  • touching surfaces contaminated with it
  • Can be found in locker rooms, around swimming pools and in warm & damp areas

Risk Factors:

  • Visiting public places barefoot
  • Sharing socks, shoes or towels with an infected person
  • wearing tight fitted , closed-toed shoes
  • sweaty feet
  • Minor skin or nail injury on your foot
  • keeping the feet wet for prolonged periods of time

Symptoms:

  • itching, stinging and burning between the toes
  • itching, stinging and burning on the soles of the foot
  • Blisters on the feet that itch
  • cracking and peeling skin on the feet
  • dry skin on the soles or sides of the feet
  • discolored, thick and crumbling toenails
  • toenails that pull away from the nail bed

Most doctor’s will diagnose this infection by doing a skin test or from the symptoms described

 

Treatment:

  • OTC medications (over the counter)
  • Prescription medications
  • home care – soaking feet in salt water or diluted vinegar to dry up the blisters

Something to keep in mind about Athlete’s foot, is that it can lead to more severe cases if someone is allergic to the fungus or if it goes untreated it can cause other issues with worse consequences. There are other alternatives to ridding of athlete’s foot but the above listed are some of the more popular ways. Be sure to consult with your doctor.

Edema (Generalized)

Today’s blog post will be discussing, you guessed it! edema and more specifically I will keep it generalized, but do keep in mind that there are different types of it, and I will discuss them in future blog post so that everyone has an idea as to what they are if you don’t already. Now personally I have never experienced edema but I know people who have and this picture above is showing the puffyness in the feet and ankles. While this condition is something most of you have heard before, I still find that any health condition is an important one to discuss?

For starters, do you know what “edema” is? before scrolling down, guess and then let me know if you were spot on. 

What Is Edema?:

Swelling caused by fluid retention (aka excess fluid is trapped in the body’s tissues)

 

Causes of Edema (generalized)

 
  • Sitting or standing in one place for too long (gravity) because it is natural for water to get pulled down to legs and feet
  • weakening of valves in the veins
  • certain diseases can bring it about 
  • medications can cause it as a symptom
  • allergic reactions
  • pregnancy can cause it to happen 

How many of you have had Edema? what was the cause of yours? 

Symptoms: 

  • affected area is swollen
  • skin could look stretched out and shiny
  • pushing into the area with a figure for about 5 seconds and releasing can leave a dimple
  • trouble walking (if you have leg edema)
  • coughing or trouble breathing (if you have lung edema)

Treatment options:

Most people probably do not know this, but edema can be temporary or more permanent. 

  • treating the underlying diseases that are causing the edema 
  • putting a pillow under your legs when lying down or sitting for prolonged periods
  • try to not sit or stand for long periods of time without moving
  • wearing support stockings
  • sometimes having to limit salt intake is especially important
  • possibly seeing a professional and being prescribed a diuretic. 
  • protect swollen areas from pressure

Most importantly, see a doctor if you experience edema.

The Medical Tag

Thank you doctorinspe for tagging me. This same blogger is the one who came up with this tag in the first place. I am so happy that someone decided to get creative and make their own tag representing their studies – please feel free to check their blog out, it would be awesome if more medical student/professionals would get involved with this tag as well:)

The Questions:

Who are you and where do you study? Good question, I am Shay-lon Moss. I currently study at home, as I have graduated in college and working on getting a certification in a career path I want to do. I may decide to attend college again in the future but taking it one step at a time for now. 

When did you start studying medicine or pre-med courses? Well let’s see when I first started college was after high school, I was going for allied health and venturing into physical therapy for awhile. When I moved back to Ohio, I continued to study physical therapy but then switched my major after reviewing how long it would take for me to be accepted into the physical therapy program (figured I would graduate in something else first and if I wanted to then go back to school for physical therapy, I could and also be working in a field that I want to work in making more money. I ended up graduating in exercise science. 

What made you choose this medical field? It was a plan B to be honest, something I had to prepare myself for in case I didn’t make into the physical therapy program. 

How did you come up with your blog name/username? Let’s be honest, it is generic, no thought into it. I honestly just went with the recommendation because I didn’t really know what to name my blog at the time. Although I will be changing my domain name soon! 

How would you describe your blog? My blog is my personality. It establishes humor when necessary, kind words of inspiration to make someone’s day, and teaches people (something I enjoy doing) in my field. 

What’s your favorite quote?: “Well, what’s up doc?” – Bugs Bunny. Jk. I normally make my own quotes and forget about them down the road, here is one I made up that I like.. “being smart doesn’t mean you know it all” – Shay-lon Moss

Best memory in medical school? The time I never went  to medical school. 

What’s one course you struggled with? Anything that had to do with math, I struggled in EVERY math class, no lie.

What’s your favorite book? Hm, this is tough because I know I have read some good books throughout my life, but can’t think of any off the top of my head right now. 

What do you do in your free time? What free time?! LOL. I like to watch movies or catch up on my series, cooking, going for walks/hiking, traveling to new places (whether in town or outside of town), trying new restaurants, playing video games, playing cards/board games, finding new hobbies because I need some. 

What do you want to major or specialize in? Personal training – more specifically possibly athletes and both men and women. I haven’t thought about what specialty I want yet, but this is necessary if I want to stand out among other trainers. I have given thought to possible strength and conditioning coach as well, so the world can lead me anywhere, I am open to different paths for myself 😀

Who do you look up to? Anyone who has be significant in my life or did something significant for the world. 

How do you study (productively)? Right now I am using notecards I made. They have been helping, my problem is I get distracted when studying so now I have to have my phone on silent and have my TV off and no music and have a quiet place to really focus, and not to mention when my hands are moving (writing something down) I do a better job of studying. 

How do you stay motivated in medical school? Make goals for after med school. 

What are your best tips for future medical students? Drinks tons of caffeine, make friends with the smart kids, never go to parties, work less hours, make huge sacrifices, live with your parents, eat mac and cheese/ramen noodles to save money (PB &J sandwiches for the most amount of saving), wear glasses so smart kids will think you are smart, read more books, raise your hand in class and participate, arrive to class 30 minutes earlier to get the best seat, eat breakfast,  stay away from alcohol, listen to Beethoven while studying, join study groups, take extra credit (even when you don’t need it), take good notes, buy your textbooks, invest in highlighters, be better at math than myself, don’t date anyone – can cause stress & we don’t want that. LOL, tell your siblings to stay out of your bedroom while you are studying, invest into a laptop, take naps, stay up late studying, wake up the first time your alarm goes off, use your computer lab when necessary, score high on SATs/ACTs, take internship programs, don’t be a jackass to your professor – it could cost you your grade, don’t sleep with your married professor to pass the class – it doesn’t make you cool, tell your boss at work you want weekends off to study if possible, do some meditation to clear your mind, drink plenty of water, have a counselor on speed dial in case you get overwhelmed and have a nervous breakdown, don’t get sick, hold your pee during class so you don’t miss anything the professor said, wear comfortable clothing, make friends with the school librarian, & MOST IMPORTANTLY – DON’T FLUNK OUT OF MED SCHOOL 😀 good luck!

Sprains

Well finally after having time to make some new content, I thought I would start it off with an injury, something most people can relate to and would not like to happen to them. First of all, how many of you have had a sprain?! (Raise of hands) and how many of you knew how to handle your sprain? (Raise of hands), okay, okay! seems like we have a good number of people in the blogosphere who have been in this situation once or twice before. Personally I have never had a sprain (that I can remember) although you would think my chances would have been higher considering I was a track athlete and basketball player and they tend to get sprains fairly often but I suppose I got lucky (knock on wood). Today, I won’t go too in-depth about this injury because it isn’t hard to comprehend, but I want to make sure everyone is aware of this injury if it should happen to them. Also, feel free to share your stories in the comment section. 

Sprain: A stretching or tearing of ligaments (the fibrous tissue that connects joints and bones) 

Some of the more common types of sprains:

  1. Sprained ankle
  2. Sprained thumb
  3. Sprained wrist
  4. Sprained knee
Symptoms:
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Limited ability to move the affected joint
  • At the time of injury, you may hear or feel a ‘pop’ in your joint
Risk Factors to consider:
  1. Poor conditioning
  2. Fatigue
  3. Improper warm-up
  4. Environmental conditions
  5. Poor equipment
Treatment:
  • Medications- some Ibuprofen or Tylenol may help with the pain for minor sprains
  • Apply ice as soon as possible to minimize swelling – in worse case scenarios the doctor may decide to use a splint or brace
  • Elevate the affected area
  • One may choose to use compression bandages (unless you notice more swelling, more pain, etc)
  • Rest- avoid activities that cause pain. 
Mild-moderate sprains are said to heal within 3-6 weeks, over the course you should be gradually using the area that is affected unless a doctor says differently. In any case, you should contact your doctor if pain, swelling, or other symptoms become a problem.

Superman (Exercise)

Hello bloggers and readers alike,

I have decided to do another exercise post today, one of which is a bit more difficult for a beginner, so I would highly recommend as a beginner to get into habit of holding it 5 seconds at a time and as you your fitness level increases, increase the length of time. I know for one thing, this is an exercise that is popular among athletes, I remember having to watch the football players do this exercise every morning while I was a strength and conditioning coach intern at the University.  This was not one of their favorite exercises to do and they were told to hold it as a team for about 15-30 seconds, and trust me it is difficult to do if you haven’t done it before, but for those of you who may be advanced athletes or fitness persons, please feel free to challenge yourself and use a weight plate in both hands or using one weight plate and switching it back and forth between the two hands, around the body, etc. Many different things can be done if the basic superman is too easy for some of you. 

I am aiming to speak on the basic superman, but again I will list some alternatives to challenge yourself if you wish at the end, and any modifications that can make this exercise any easier for my beginners. Let’s get started. 

Superman- how is it done:

  1. Lie straight and face down on the floor and/or mat, Arms fully extended in front of you (starting position)
  2. Simultaneously raise your arms, legs, and chest off the floor, and hold this contraction for two seconds. Exhale during this movement, 
  3. Slowly begin to lower your arms, legs and chest back down to the starting position as you inhale
  4. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions
When performing this exercise it is important to know that you will need to use your back muscles to help hold you up, do not perform this exercise if you have  back injuries or had back injuries, and have not done a proper warm-up. Consult with your doctor first to prevent further injury, and consult with a fitness specialist if you need instruction on form/technique.
Modifications made to make it easier:
  1. If lifting both arms and legs are too difficult: you can lift alternate legs and arms at one time.  
Do you want a challenge:
  1. hold your superman for 1 minute at a time
  2. do more sets
  3. use weight plates in either or both hands
  4. using a weight plate or medicine ball, pass them back and forth between each hand 
  5. using a weight plate or medicine ball, pass them behind you (pass to the left or right hand, hand it over your back to the other hand and repeat)
I have done the more challenging one where I used the weight plate in my CrossFit class and it was no joke, took me by surprise. 
Superman benefits:
  • Strengthen the upper and lower back
  • also strengths the glutes and hamstrings
  • using different variations you can work your core muscles
Warning:
  • This exercise has been known to cause back issues if not done correctly and if done excessively
  • some scientist have gone to prove that it might have minimal significance on the back muscles, glutes, and hamstrings. 
  • Small ROM (range of motion)
Nonetheless, if you are beginner, start off with 1-2 seconds, maybe even 5 second holds, if you are natural and pro at this exercise, challenge yourself if necessary and like I always tell people, there are ALWAYS better options out there, so don’t rely on just this exercise, go out and explore others. Not every exercise I mention do I implement in my workouts, do I love, do I recommend, do I agree with and not every exercise I mention should be done by all populations. This is when research and asking questions should be done before jumping into an exercise. My goal is to talk about each and every exercise I have done, haven’t done, seen done, researched, etc. I may never get to all of them but it is one hell of a goal, not to mention doing this means I can come up with ideas for myself or clients.
