Powerlifting Cycle Two— Week 5

Day Three- Chest day

Eh, so today’s lifting was bench press aka chest day. I had some good improvements with my reps, but fell short in my lifting when it got heavier (close to my 1 rep max), so I am going to probably start lifting bench twice a week starting Monday, because my bench press is slowest to progress compared to other 3 big lifts, and I want to hit 135 by March. I am like 5-10 lb away from it, so I know it is possible with the right strategy and of course hard work. I spoke to someone at the gym about it today, so they gave me an idea that I plan on implementing for it. We shall see how well it goes.

  • Barbell bench press: 3 x 3

  • 70% of 90% of 1-RM: 85 lb
  • 80% of 90% of 1-RM: 95 lb
  • 90% of 90% of 1-RM: 105 lb, 6 max reps (I did 2 more reps compared to week 2) Yay!

  • Wide Grip pull up (assistance machine): 5 x 15, 120 lb
  • DB chest press: 5 x 15, 50 lb
  • Wide grip lat pull down: 5 x 15, 60 lb
  • Incline DB chest press: 5 x 15, 50 lb

Cardio:

  • Stationary bike:20 minutes, level 8. Rpm: 70+

So basically I am struggling to use my feet to push me while benching with an arch,I have finally gotten down the straight wrist idea, but now it is focusing on pushing my heels when I bench so I can get that weight up quicker and more efficiently. This is going to take some learning and practice before I have it down, but if I plan on competing and being at my best within competitions, I have to learn to get better at these things or make it work for me. I was struggling at 1 rep for 125 lb and my max is supposed to be 135 now (I have to add 5 lb this week), so with that being said, UGHHHH! not happy with struggling at 125, but will continue to work on it.. I know I can do this.

Deadlifts — Tuesday– Cycle 2

Road To powerlifting

  • Conventional Deadlifts: 3 x 3

  • 70% of 90% of 1-RM: 180 lb
  • 80% of 90% of 1-RM: 210 lb
  • 90% of 90% of 1-RM: 235 lb, 5 max reps

  • Goodmorning: 5 x 15, 50 lb
  • Stiff legged DB deadlifts: 5 x 15, 60 lb
  • One arm kettlebell swing: 5 x 15, 12kg
  • Front Box jumps: 5 x 15

I had to had to add 10 lb to my 1RM total and then figure out the new 90% of it, so if you are comparing last week with this week (week two of last week) then you will notice a difference int the numbers, obviously with the increase, I am lifting higher weights. Long Leg Day

I would just like to mention that today’s leg day was written down a lot harder than what I got finished within 3 hours. I know it seems like a long day, but that includes the breaks, because this week is all heavy lifting, which means longer rest periods. I don’t ever plan on being at a gym for more than 1 hour, but since training for powerlifting, I have been inside a gym no less than 2 hours .. which probably is normal depending on your fitness level and your workouts. I know many days I have a cardio and lift that (so take that into consideration) most lifters don’t like doing their cardio on the same days as lifting. I am an odd ball and so far have been able to handle it. I will also mention that some days I have a gym partner (now); I guess that is what happens when you make new friends at the gym, they then decide it would be cool to lift with you and thank goodness she lifts just as much or heavier than me.. so it hasn’t been bad at all, considering I am usually a lone wolf when I workout and I liked it. Many times my workout sets or reps get cut because she wants to shorten the gym period but very rarely will I be doing that because we have different goals in mind and I need to focus on my overall goal  to put it lightly. Regardless, it has been nice to have a gym partner every once in a while to keep me motivated and help spot me.

  • barbell back squat:

  • 75% of 90% of my 1-RM: 3 x 5, 135 lb
  • 85% of 90% of my 1-RM: 3 x 3, 155 lb
  • 95% of my 90% of my 1-RM: 3 x 1, 170 lb
  • 95% of my true 1-RM (singles): 3 x 1, 190 lb

  • Jump squats: 2 x 25-30 seconds
  • leg press: 5 x 20, 208 lb
  • DB goblet squats: 3 x 15, 25 lb
  • Barbell front squats: 3 x 10, 6, 12, 95 lb, 55 lb

P.S I also implemented foam rolling and stretching along with my warm up in the beginning of my workout — yay 🙂

My Gym Workout – Happy 1st of December!

Glasses, Champagne, Toast, Celebration

Hello FitFam,

Happy 1st of Decemeber to all of you!

December will probably be a busy month for most of us since the holidays are always crazy and busy and other of us may have to endure some horrible winter weather. Yuck! Definitely not looking forward to that. Anyhow, today John could not make it this morning for his workout, so he said he would go after work today, hopefully he does. He didn’t confirm whether or not he attended yesterday, but for my sake, I hope he did because I don’t send workouts for fun, lol. He did say he would be showing up tomorrow morning, so we shall see. Tomorrow will be a very busy day for me, as always. So, I may or may not be available to post my workout and other content. As you all are aware, I take weekends off away from the blog, but I may still come by and do some things since I have to write another article. Today’s workout was simple, heavy and actually was a personal best for me.

My workout:

Warm up:

  • Treadmill: 12 minutes, 3.6 speed, no incline

Workout Session:

Pyramid (leg press):

  • 1 x 12, no added weight
  • 1 x 12, 50lb
  • 1 x 12, 90lb
  • 1 x 12, 140lb
  • 1 x 12, 180lb
  • 1 x 10, 230lb
  • 1 x 8, 270lb
  • 1 x 4, 360lb
  • 1 x 4, 360lb

Between sets of leg press, I was doing Seated Russian Twist:

  • 9 x 30 with a 25lb weight plate. I have thought about using a 45lb weight plate.. to see if I can manage it, that will be another goal.

My last exercise of the day today:

  • Dumbbell squat to shoulder press: 4 x 10, 40lb

I PR’d in my leg press, my new all time high is 360lb, next goal is 400lb. I thought I would only 1RM it because it was heavy, but I managed to get 4 good reps, almost 5. My dumbbell squat to shoulder press was a new PR’d as well, I increased my weight by 20lb, so that was exciting, hopefully my next goal will be to hit 60lb 🙂 Overall good workout.
